The third grade represents experienced leadership in the Primary School. Each child learns the importance of independence, assertiveness, and organization. All third graders are taught to think outside of their comfort zones and to construct original questions that will challenge their classmates. A solid academic foundation prepares them for their many challenges and responsibilities in the Middle School.
Language arts focuses on competent writing skills, specific spelling strategies, acquiring new vocabulary, and fluent oral reading with thorough comprehension. Math classes cover a range of topics including multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, geometry, measurement, elapsed time, and probability. Throughout the year in social studies, students are introduced to a diverse world with their class projects about Native Americans, the United States’ first colonists and explorers and, finally, immigration. Cursive handwriting is increasingly incorporated into their assignments. Each child learns keyboarding skills on a laptop computer during the second half of the school year. Children visit specialists for music, library, French, science, art, and physical education.
Third graders assist with recycling paper for the Primary School and helping younger children feel safe and happy at school. Character development is taught using the Tribes curriculum and through sharing acts of kindness. An appreciation of the natural world begins with our annual hike on trails located next to the school. Encouraging less television viewing and more community service prepares students to be proactive citizens and to take ownership of their precious planet. Reflective thinking both in and outside of the classroom is frequently modeled every day.
Third grade is taught by two teachers, and the class size is limited to twenty students for a productive ratio. Additional information can be discovered by visiting the curriculum pages and photo galleries.
