The first grade begins the year by sharing the children's favorite picture books from home. Listening and responding to stories plays a big role in the first grade's language arts program. Students learn from their favorite authors about the qualities of good writing and apply them to their own literary efforts. Social Studies in the first grade is the study of the family. Students explore the geography of the world and relate it to their family histories. In math, students often work in pairs as they review the basic foundations of numeracy, including time, money, and number skills.
