The sixth grade is the capstone of our Middle School. In preparation to leave the Middle School, the emphasis is on personal accountability and critical thinking, both in the classroom and beyond.
In English and history class, students read a variety of literature, including period literature such as Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales. While students write for a variety of contexts, the emphasis is on the multi-paragraph analytical essay. Meanwhile, with consistent term paper work, students come to master each stage of the research process.
In math class, the pre-algebra curriculum leads students from concrete to abstract thinking, with a focus on manipulating integers and variables.
In science, the exploration of the environment and water systems includes aspects of biology, physics, and geology. Throughout the year and especially during the science symposium, students practice sound laboratory procedure, from planning an experiment through writing the report.
Sixth grade art, music, and foreign languages are all closely tied to the core curriculum in history and English, and rich field trips tighten those bonds. For example, in the winter, students study Renaissance art and painting in history, art, and foreign language; they then complete a poetry-writing project while visiting the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The sixth grade character education program, called HEART, is similarly rich, often drawing on topics from history, geography, social studies, science, literature, and beyond.
