Fifth graders at TPS study under the direction of subject-area specialists in English/history and mathematics. Teachers guide students through the study of Egypt, Greece, and Rome. In the fall, as they study Egypt, students actively engage in an archaeological dig, learning techniques as well as attendant analytical skills.
Students write frequently in all of their classes, as they learn to write expository five-paragraph essays.
Students in fifth grade develop and solidify their skills in computing with fractions, decimals and percents while they work on real-world problems.
In science, students investigate the systems of the human body.
Art and music are closely tied to the students’ history studies.
Field trips are closely tied to ancient history and art, with a trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City serving as a culminating learning experience.
Students continue to work within the HEART program to grow socially and emotionally; guiding younger students from the Primary School in reading is just one of the activities during which fifth graders learn to serve their community.
