The most important part of social studies in the Pre-K classroom is learning how to function as a member of a group, beginning with classroom routines and expectations then branching out into the school community. This is practiced everyday as we learn to share, to help one another learn, to become responsible with materials, to complete a classroom job and to respect each other’s safety.

Social studies is often the core of a theme that connects other areas of learning. During the first month of school, we also learn about one another, including likes and dislikes, families, how to be a good friend, birthdays, and names. November and December are months to discuss family traditions related to holidays as well as a cultural study that is done in December.

In January the Pre-K studies stores, why people buy things, and how storeowners make decisions. Types of stores discussed are open to the interests of the children. February through Spring Break we take a closer look at animals. We discuss how people and animals interact and how people care for animals, including pets. Learning about various habitats leads to discussions about differences and similarities among animals. The animal study directs us into a farm study. We look at the components of a farm, including animals, buildings, and types of farms and the job of a farmer. We finish up the year by studying water. We look at the ways that people use it and come to understand that water is all around us, from puddles to oceans.

The ECC makes every effort to maintain a positive home-school connection. Parents are invited to participate in the classroom by sharing a favorite story or to help us cook. We invite all parents to join our field trips whenever possible.
