Children in the ECC experience art in the classroom everyday. We offer a variety of materials for exploration. We do not stress the final product, but instead cherish the process that children use to create. We are considerate of language when discussing art with children, asking questions such as “how did you do that” or “tell me about this part," rather than “what is it?”

We begin the year by studying colors and collage materials. Children paint at the easel and by using a tray on a table for mixing and flat painting. Observational drawing is done of class pets and each other. We discuss lines and how they can change a drawing. Our author studies throughout the year give children a look into how different people make different paintings. Studies of Matisse and Van Gogh, in an age appropriate manner, provide children with a new way to think about painting. They explore three-dimensional art at the wood working table and through art projects with clay and collage.

We ask parents each month to work with their child on a collaborative art project for a special bulletin board. We encourage creativity with each month’s theme, asking that the same family not repeat materials from month to month. Monthly themes include pumpkins, turkeys, gifts, snow, hearts, rain and flowers.
